About Todd Hido
Todd Hido is an American photographer best known for his cinematic images of suburban homes at night — lone windows glowing against darkened streets, shot on long drives through the neighborhoods outside San Francisco. Working almost exclusively after dusk and in overcast weather, he photographs the ordinary edges of American life and turns them into something quietly unsettling: houses that feel inhabited by stories rather than people, wet roads and bare trees rendered in deep, muted color. Hido shoots on film and prints large, and his books — including House Hunting, Outskirts, and Intimate Distance — have become touchstones of contemporary photographic publishing. His influence runs through a generation of photographers drawn to atmosphere over spectacle: the idea that a picture of nothing in particular, made with patience, can hold more tension than any dramatic subject.
