We call it all by one name — a statement of commonality riddled with contradictions, yet presenting a hope of a peaceful world. Interconnected, built over, old, though also far from the oldest. Uncertain whether what it preserves are in fact contexts, or merely ruins. A home to so many who never lived there. A legacy of thought and exhausted destruction, built out of bitterness and anxiety, when the idealism was already far gone. Post-imperial, but also the closest we have to a post-national, peopled by trains, churches, fields and architectural practices, as much as by actual people. Definitely a tapestry. What is one to make of it all?
