I am interested in making photographs that are tied to realism through a sense of place, yet often appear to be staged or constructed, or reduced to the point of abstraction. For the past several years, I have been photographing in neighborhoods throughout Queens (New York) putting into focus some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in the United States. These neighborhoods, which are sometimes considered peripheral in the minds of many New Yorkers, have provided a fertile landscape to photograph that is simultaneously realist and abstract, as cultural identities merge and new meaning is inscribed.
